Before this assignment we had looked through multiple different images discussing the pictorial variables in the group. Going through e.g. colors, light, space, perspective, composition and also discussion on what is art, an artist and the different layers of creativity.

For the assignment we were to pick some basic variable from the images we went through and, again, go down to Capitolium hallway to draw something using the variable. There was to be used collage as well.

My main inspiration was the piece made by David Hockney, “The Luxor Hotel” (1978). I chose light as my variable because I loved the light in this piece and it play big part in this building as well (too obvious choice then I suppose :D). There is simplicity in the piece yet there is just the right details drawn. Overall I liked the blue cool shadows so I wanted to paint into my image shadows strongly in blue and similarly portray light in pure white (sunny day cool shadows).

There was used mixed techniques for the image, so I first sketched in pencil, colored in watercolor (blocking of light sources with tape or masking fluid) and in the end I did some details with colored pencils and made all the pillars and lines forming shadows from cut paper. I tried to skip some details / simplify, but I suppose I could have portrayed the environment even less exact and more artistic.

As side note, I also googled a bit more on David Hockney’s art and also shortly read about him and his works. I appreciate the fact that Hockey also uses digital medium to create and/or continue his works, considering it is supposedly still somewhat frowned upon in ‘art’. During the lesson there was also mentioned that there is currently an exhibition currently in Helsinki displaying his work, so I hope I have time to visit there next week!

Yksi kuvallinen perusmuuttuja – tehtävä (6.10.)

Tätä tehtävää ennen kävimme läpi monia eri kuvia keskustellen eri kuvallisia muuttujia ryhmässä. Kävimme läpi mm., väri, valo, tila, perspektiivi, kompositio ja myös keskustelua siitä mitä on taide, taiteilija ja luovuuden eri tasoja.
Tehtävää varten kuviin perustuen tuli valite yksi kuvallinen perusmuuttuja ja lähteä jälleen alas piirtämään päärakennuksen käytävälle. Kuvassa tuli käyttää myös kollaasia.

Pääinspiraationi oli David Hockneyn teos “The Luxor Hotel” (1978). Valitsin valon muuttujakseni koska pidin kuvan valosta sekä tässä rakennuksessa valo on suuressa roolissa myös (turhan ilmiselvä valinta kenties :D). Kuva on yksinkertainen, mutta siin on kuitenkin juuri relevantit yksityiskohdat kuvattuna. Kaikenkaikkiaan pidin kuvan sinisistä viileistä varjoista joten halusin maalata varjot kuvaani vahvan sinisinä ja vastaavasti kuvata valon puhtaana valkoisena (aurinkoisen päivän viileät varjot).

Kuvassa käytettiin sekatekniikkaa, ensin piirsin lyijykynällä, maalasin vesivärein (suojaten valoisat alueet teipillä ja maskausnesteellä) ja loppuun tein joitain yksityiskohtia puuvärein sekä liimasin leikatusta paperista kaikki varjoa langettavat pilarit ja muut linjat. Yritin yksinkertaistaa kuvaa, mutta olisin voinut ehkä tehdä kuvasta vielä vähemmän eksaktin ja taiteellisemman.
