First advance assignment was to tell of an interesting art experience and show or otherwise convey it to the class. During the class a follow up task (~1h) was to portray in you own work, free to choose medium, how the art experience / piece of art I chose, spoke to me. How I would follow up from it. I struggled just trying to grasp what the assignment is about, how deep analysis and discussion am I to have. Then next problem was what on earth to draw. I chose to use pencils, as I have not touched any paints in ages, well not pens either, but it felt more natural as the task seemed so overwhelming already.

The experience I had with the original image, was the impact of the story being told. I have rarely, if at all, come across any strong stories in Instagram, quite epic and awesome pics technically sure, but this was different. I came across Jakub Rozalski’s ‘Shepherd and his faithful dog’. It touched me, maybe because I have a dog and I like animals. I could imagine the wonder and slight terror of the sheep and the dog being unsure of his master. The shepherd himself in his mindless beast state, ready to assault, perhaps oblivious it is his loyal companion in front of him. Imagine the next day, which could be dark, or not.  

In my own image I thought of drawing the silent empty meadow, but I had no inspiration how to proceed and I was unsure whether I can link that enough through pencils to the original painting (idea was, that there is no dog, sheep or werewolf, just silence). That I want to maybe do one day as water color piece, working on the colors/mood. Instead now I chose to portray the threat, the intimidating figure of the werewolf as more of a silhouette in  a strong  back light setting. He perhaps headed home, after the ominous night (what happened?).

I was not entirely happy with the intensity with the pencils in the work, so might have to do try this with charcoal also.

Kuvataidekokemus tehtävä (21.9.)

Ennakkotehtävänä oli kertoa kiinnostavasta kuvataidekokemuksesta ja kertoa siitä luokalle. Tunnin aikana (~1h) piti seuraavaksi jatkotehtävänä tehdä vapaavalintaisella tekniikalla oma työ, siitä kuinka kokemus/teos puhutteli itseä. Kuinka jatkaisin teosta. Hämmennyin tehtävänannosta, yrittäen ymmärtää mitä tehtävällä haluttiin ja kuinka syvällisesti asiaa tulisi pohtia. Seuraava haaste olikin, että mitä sitten piirrän. Valitsin lyijykynät, koska en ole maaleihin koskenut ikuisuuksiin, en tosin kyniinkään, mutta se oli luonnollisempi valinta tehtävän ollessa jo muutenkin haastava.

Kokemus alkuperäisen kuvan kanssa pohjautui tarinaan, tarinan voimaan kuvallisessa ilmaisussa. Harvemmin olen törmännyt instagramissa kuviin, joissa olisi vahva tarina. Toki paljolti teknisesti upeisiin kuviin, mutta tämä poikkesi muista. Jakub Rozalski:n ‘Shepherd and his faithful dog’ (Paimen ja paimenen uskollinen koira) teos kosketti minua, ehkä kenties koska minulla on koira ja pidän eläimistä. Pystyin kuvittelemaan lampaiden ihmetyksen ja hiipivän kauhun ja koiran epävarmuuden isännän suhteen. Paimen itse järjettömässä hirviömäisessä tilassaan, valmiina hyökkäämään, ehkä epätietoinen että edessä oleva koira on hänen lojaali koiransa. Kuvittele seuraava päivä, joka on joko synkkä, tai ei.

Omassa kuvassa ajattelin ensin piirtää tyhjän ja hiljaisen niityn, mutta pää löi tyhjää miten edetä, enkä uskonut saavani riittävää linkitystä lyijykynin alkuperäiseen kuvaan (ajatuksena kuitenkin oli kuva ilman koiraa, lampaita ja paimenta, vain hiljaisuutta). Sen ehkä toteutan joskus ennemmin vesivärein, toisintaen värimaailmaa/tunnelmaa. Nyt tehdyssä kuvassa halusin kuvata uhkaa, pelottavan ihmissuden hahmoa silhuettina vahvassa valaistuksessa. Hän ehkä lähti kotiin, pahaenteisen yön jäljiltä (mitä kävi?).

En ihan täysin ollut tyytyväinen lyijykyniin työssä, halusin vahvemman kontrastin, joten pitänee kokeilla samaa kuvaa vielä hiilillä.

Kokonaisuudessaan, tehtävä toimi äkkinäisenä taiteellisenajattelun kuin myös vanhojen piirustustaitojen herättelynä.
